The latest US-led military action in the South American nation and the detention of its president have renewed worry regarding America's designs on Greenland. Members of the ex-president's base have reportedly turned their attention to the vast landmass following the events in South America.

Only a short time following the initiation of the Caracas operation, a well-known right-wing commentator, who is married to a senior White House adviser, shared a suggestive image. The picture showed Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, accompanied by cryptic message: "SOON."

This blatant threat to annex the mineral-rich region, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked immediate and strong criticism from Denmark's officials.

"We are strong partners and should keep cooperate as such. US security is also the Arctic's and Denmark’s security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to ensure security in the Arctic."

The diplomat additionally pointed out that Denmark had significantly boosted its military budget recently, allocating a large sum expressly for Arctic and North Atlantic security. "And yes, we demand full recognition for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

In a significant television appearance, the president refused to exclude the use of armed action to acquire Greenland. This stance comes amid growing global rivalry in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He characterized Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll value them... But we need that for global security."

Mounting Tensions and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this constant "drumbeat" of threats, Danish security agency took the extraordinary step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The leaders of both Greenland issued a unified and forceful statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland reveals a nuanced picture. While a vast majority of the island's residents desire self-rule from Copenhagen, there is also little to no appetite to join the United States. The territory has had the legal right to declare independence for many years.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Scenario?

Some experts are now re-evaluating the possibility of such a move. One thinktank director focusing in defence conceded she had once discounted the rhetoric but was "currently not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to deploy a few hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could do anything about it," she observed.
