The entire Secret Lair superdrop for the soon-to-release Avatar: The Last Airbender collection was announced on November 4. Containing five separate collections, and while the one called "My Cabbages!" is clearly funny homage to the show's most famous minor character, the other collections appear slightly uninspired, aside from one remarkable entry: "The Ember Island Players."
Drawing from the seventeenth episode from season 3 of the beloved series, this special set includes the following cards:
- 1x Phantasmal Image as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
- 1x Braid of Fire
- 1x Cursed Mirror
- 1x Mask of Memory
- 1x Thespian's Stage
Why this segment is special
Fans of the show fondly remember this particular episode, which served as a summary of the protagonist Aang and his friends' adventure prior to the final episode. Unlike typical clip shows, or compilation episodes, "The Ember Island Players" did not stem by budget restrictions or creative challenges. The creators truly wanted to offer viewers a moment to reflect on the show's narrative, yet they chose to approach it inventively.
During the installment, the crew observe a theatrical performance inspired by their exploits in a theater on Ember Island, titled The Boy in the Iceberg. The entire performance is inaccurate, over-the-top, and completely amusing. It excels since it plays with the heroes' understanding regarding their own identities, juxtaposing them against how the world (and especially the Fire Nation citizens) sees them. It possesses the right amount of introspective humor, and it ends up perhaps the finest interpretation of the show we have had.
