Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these drugs should be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts propose the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
