Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an raid targeting a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.
The gang of attackers stormed the public educational institution for female students in Kebbi State's Maga area at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, officials stated.
The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.
An educational worker was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.
Community members told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.
In the past few years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for militant organizations, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.
The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, leaving families in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they expect and desire their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
Security crisis in the northern regions of Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the last several months, with educational institutions experiencing the greatest impact of the violence.
