While Beachgoers Fled Violence, Widely-Shared Photo Depicts Lifeguard Dashing ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, views the iconic shoreline as her personal space. On a recent weekend night, she, similar to other local residents, detected cracking sounds ringing out around the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her home, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore made it clear something was wrong.

While standing on the street, talking to a duo who had hurried up the incline in their swimwear, she became aware of someone approaching at her rear. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was alone moving in the path that all the others was trying to escape from, and hauling that large equipment and unshod … He moved into something that certainly every fibre in your being would signal you to move in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally maximum effort racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery In the Wake of Chaos

The photo that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous acts of heroism in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, law enforcement and paramedics caring for dozens of those hurt.

Community Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s story was just one of many to emerge from the local area, with the patrol base beside the site of the incident serving as a temporary treatment center. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, such as rushing into the surf to save people who were struggling.

After the attack, comments of support were shared. An online statement conveyed appreciation for the individuals who showed that “compassion will always triumph over evil”.

The team of rescuers issued a message, explaining they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful sentiments and solidarity. We are deeply moved by the compassion for our personnel,” the team commented. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the aim that it supports those involved.”

Official Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many full-time beach safety officers, said that the staff rose to the occasion from the second the incident began right into late that nighttime.

“There have been so many emotional stories, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” stated a mayor.

“Our lifeguards show dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous shores protected for visitors, but what we observed on Sunday should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the horror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much good we have observed in the face of such darkness.”
